Young Research Scientist Award Winners
The Organising Committee of Urban Environmental Pollution is delighted to
announce the 2010 Winners of
Young Research
Scientist Award Winners
Dr. Cristoff Gromke, Scientist, WSL Institute for
Snow and Avalanche Research, Switzerland
- Urban air quality in street canyons with avenue-like tree planting
In his PhD research Dr. Gromke demonstrated that while trees are desirable
in an urban environment, their configuration (clumped vs avenue-like
plantings) influences air quality in urban street canyons. This is new and
significant information.

Dr. Mark J. Potosnak, Assistant Professor, DePaul
University, USA
- Urban carbon dioxide concentration and flux measurements from a
building rooftop in Boston, Massachusetts
Dr. Potosnak has been very active in monitoring volatile organic compounds
from urban trees in relation to their contribution to the photochemical
oxidant cycle that produces ozone. He is currently collaborating with
scientists at Boston University to monitor CO2 concentrations in Boston. His
work is innovative and significant.

Dr. Lina Yang, Postdoc, The University of Hong Kong,
Hong Kong, China
- Ventilation by thermal buoyancy for better urban environment
Dr. Yang's research has focused on expanding criteria for urban ventilation
and air flow to include the new concept of thermal buoyancy to increase
urban ventilation and provide a better urban environment.
